American Indians

WWII was devastating Europe, but the kids tried to have fun anyway.

I found this picture in a bundle of photos that my uncle gave me after my father’s death: I guess he is the kneeled one on the left. I suppose they were dressed up like American Indians (as Native Americans were called at the time)  for Carnival.  The priest is a real one, he is not disguised.
They are supposed to join a party or a funny parade, but no one is smiling. Someone looks proud of his camouflage, that’s all.  Looking at pictures taken in the past I always wonder why people were so serious: were they told not to smile? were they moved or nervous in front of the camera? were their minds travelling elsewhere?

The war was devastating Europe and my grandfather was in a prison camp. But the kids tried to have fun anyway.
